Ταξίδια Τhe Running of the Bulls Daring, debauched, and, yes, slightly demented, the participants of the annual running of the bulls have been called many things. But every year thousands of people turn up for Pamplona's San Fermín festival and its tour de machismo, the running of the bulls. Here, some of the best shots from 2009's running. 1. Οι 21 καλύτερες φωτογραφίες του διαστήματος Where in the World Is Bruce McCandless? In February, 1984, astronaut Bruce McCandless floats 320 feet from the space shuttle Challenger during the first-ever untethered space walk, made possible by that most sci-fi of all gadgets, a jet-propelled backpack. Almost everything that makes the idea of exploring space can be found in this picture: the immediately recognizeable human form; the vastness of space; the blue glow of Earth, an impossibly long way off, and yet right there, in sight. For a second this picture feels comical. Quite quickly, it turns harrowing and thrilling at once. Photo: NASA/Getty Images févr. 07, 1984 2. Apollo 11: Εικόνες από το φεγγάρι Buzz Aldrin Steps Onto the Moon, July 20, 1969 Aldrin descends the lunar module Eagle's ladder, his foot poised above the surface of the moon. Aldrin, famously, is the "second man on the moon," after Neil Armstrong, who took this picture after he himself set foot on the lunar surface and uttered the words: "One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind." Photo: Neil Armstrong/Getty Images Jul 20, 1969 Πηγή: LIFE Τελευταία επεξεργασία από το χρήστη christi : 17-07-09 στις 19:10 Αιτία: προσθήκη πηγής |

Life on Mars: Australia's Outback (κλικ και για άλλες) G'Day Welcome to the Australian outback. It may share the name of your favorite steakhouse, but the real outback is nowhere near as inviting. The term refers to the vast, arid patches of the Australian continent where very few people live, and since 97% of Australia's population lives near the coast, that means there's a lot of outback to go around. Seen here are Pinnacles in the Desert, in Nambung National Park. LIFE CLASSIC - Woodstock: LIFE's Best Photos (κλικ και για άλλες) The Beat of a New Generation Forty years ago, LIFE's photographers and reporters were on the scene when half a million young people -- "lured by music, the country and some strange kind of magic" -- came together on a dairy farm in upstate New York. From Aug. 15-18 of 1969, they created a colorful, amazingly functional community whose ideals would reverberate for much longer than those three days. To celebrate the anniversary of Woodstock, LIFE.com presents the best photos from the festival -- shots that evoke its spirit of peace, love, music, and mud. Pictured: His hair flying, one of the 500,000 bangs a drum at Woodstock. Photo: Bill Eppridge./Time & Life Pictures/Getty Images Aug 01, 1969 EXCLUSIVE: Unseen Woodstock Photos (κλικ και για άλλες) Max and Miriam Yasgur, After the Show Dairy farmer Max Yasgur, 49, leased his land to Woodstock organizers for the festival, thus ensuring that the event took place, and earning himself a spot in pop culture history. "You've proven to the world that a half-million kids -- and I call you kids because I have children that are older than you are," Yasgur told the throng from the stage, "a half million young people can get together and have three days of fun and music and have nothing but fun and music. And God bless you for it!" Photo: Bill Eppridge Ιουλ 28, 2009 Από το LIFE.COM |

National Geographic - Pictures: Best Micro-Photos of 2009 Announced
Second Place: Blossom Stem An image of a thin cross section of the stem of a Sonchus asper blossom, a yellow blooming wildflower often found on farmland, took second place in the 2009 Small World Photomicrography Competition. "The remarkable contrast between the red hats of the plant hairs and the green stem in combination with the white stems thrilled me," photographer and organic farmer Gerd A. Guenther, from Dusseldorf, Germany, said in a statement. The plant was magnified 150 times, bringing a new perspective to the wonders of nature, Guenther added. —Photograph by Gerd A. Guenther, courtesy Nikon Small World Fourth Place: Ovary Spiral Developing oocytes, or unfertilized eggs, move along the spiral of an anglerfish's ovary (anglerfish picture and facts) in this winning picture from the 2009 Small World Photomicrography Competition. The walls of the ovary are distinguished with stains added by photomicrographist James E. Hayden. "Even though it was primarily artistic ... the image could actually be used to demonstrate the [structure] of the ovary and eggs," Hayden, of the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, said in a statement. —Photograph by James E. Already a deeply impoverished country with only the bare bones of an infrastructure--and wracked by widespread unemployment, crime, and HIV infection--it is not too dramatic to say that it may take decades to recover.
